Boston 10 Logan

Our flight home got delayed for several hours. Stormy weather in Atlanta gave me a couple of the so called “butt-hours” (horas nalga) to sketch and be enchanted by departing and landing airplanes, one of my ever present fascinations.
Adriana took a nap and here she is.

A series of antique buildings share a Pantheon like placement into the contemporary city. This works very well with perspective, as these buildings are either into the tumultuous newer shapes or work out very well layering the city age.

The 4th day at Boston was dedicated to Harvard & Cambridge. The mandatory visit in the landscape tour is a stop at the Mount Auburn Cemetery. A beautiful place.

Simmons Hall by Steven Holl: a wonderful building in a worthless context. In the end everything goes to the detail, in the end everything’s about screws. This building is very recognizable from the ground and from the air, as I witnessed from the departing airplane. I’m told that the building at night is impressive, with lights on describing it’s geometry from the Boston side of the Charles River, looking into the Cambridge side. I regret not coming back at night, but most of the building is already seen from magazines, the surprise has to be it’s context.
From the T station the architectural promenade is accompanied by Saarinen, Gehry, and Aalto building’s. Gehry’s almost new, but what would be the reason to extend pictures about his building? (anyway I shot dozens).

The central lawn for Boston. What it lacks the surrounding city makes up for. I prefer the contiguous Public Garden.

The government center at night. The government building is an impressive heavy, almost brutalist structure that headlines the area between the financial center and the Quincy Market. An extense public plaza sorrounds the building which responds to it with a narrower base covered by the insterstitial wedged section.
