Posmodern Chapel to be Demolished

February 13, 2007

A chapel in Emory University scheduled for demolition. Empty, closed, lonely: but still accesible to architectural tourists who feel free to kind of force doors. Author: Mack Scogin and Merril Elam. Only here in the US, the luxury, the expense, the waste, of demolishing an almost intact signature structure. http://www.msmearch.com/academic/emory.html

Perry Lakes

Birding tower in the Perry Lakes Park. A restored tower, labeled piece by piece, regalvanized, moved to its new location, rebuilt, included an internal stair, seldomly used? and published.

Miquel Adria at Auburn

February 11, 2007

Miquel showed us his known presentation titled “Arquitecturas Mexicanas”. This is the same one I’ve seen at least one time in Chihuahua in 2004-2005, but updated with newer projects as the Vasconcelos Library by Kalach “and some others” and the BGP Guadalara house. Everything was new for all of the American students at Auburn and most of the faculty. Judging by their faces (if you look acutely into the photograph) and after-lecture comments.
The 3 contemporary trends of Mexican Architecture: The overkilled Barraganian’s, the decaying “Volumetric Expressionism” and the ongoing “International” approach. But, as one of a kind, Kalach stands out.
